My
wife Evelyn and I spent a nice day and night at Lake Tahoe and the
Emerald Bay area. Emerald Bay itself is beautiful. But during the
summer months, it is very crowded. We visited last Winter and got
some great pix which I will show later. Anyway, we got to the area
but made a day hike from Emerald Bay to Cascade Lake and Falls. The
trip starts from the camp ground on the South side of the Bay and
heads South Westerly. The total trip is about 1.5 miles, but is variated
up and down. |
We
huffed and puffed a lot, but considering that the elevation is about
12,000 feet, we don't apologize. Here is Evelyn by a weathered tree,
overlooking Cascade Lake with Lake Tahoe in the distance. |
A
real problem with this area is the incessant haze. A polarizer helps
a lot but the haze is still there. During the Winter, fireplaces generate
most of the haze. In the Summer, inversion, forest fires, and auto
pollution lead to haze. |
It
was much better here 10 years ago. I suppose that is true of most
anyplace. But I got some great shots, even if I had to tromp
around on the snow to get them. Here is one shot and the setup.
These are at Sunnyside Hotel/Restaurant South of Tahoe City on Highway
89--just about 10 minutes North of Emerald Bay. |
Another
favorite spot on North Shore is Tahoe City. It is just South
of Truckee on Highway 89 and past the entrance to Sqaw Valley Olympic
Ski Resort. This town is right on the lake and offers many great
views of Lake Tahoe from the North looking South from East to West. |
For
some crazy action, here is the epitome of Tahoe Extreme....bungee
jumping at the top of Sqaw Valley! |
|
Our
favorite place to stay is the Rodeway Inn since it is right "downtown"
and within easy walking distance to our favorite eating establishments.
These
shots are from Jake's Restaurant back patio looking South.
This
is also one of the major marinas on the lake.
